Lung CT Scan / Clinic Appointments
Edward Cancer Center's Multidisciplinary Thoracic Oncology Clinic, the first of its kind in DuPage County, features the chance to see several experienced cancer specialists in one location resulting in coordinated, faster, more efficient treatment for patients with lung cancer and other malignancies and abnormalities of the chest. This type of care can be provided by academic hospitals, but typically has not been available in community hospitals.
Lung Screening Program
Edward Cancer Center offers a CT Lung Screening for at risk patients. This lung screening, designed to assist in early detection, can give those at risk the opportunity for a healthier lifestyle. Learn more about who should have a CT Lung Screen and more about the procedure.
Unlike other centers that simply screen and provide your results, the Edward Cancer Center has a Multidisciplinary Thoracic Oncology Clinic made up of a team of cancer experts. Once you are screened, you will automatically be enrolled in our Multidisciplinary Clinic and our experts will actively follow up with you on a yearly basis to monitor your lung health.
In the event a nodule is found to be cancerous, our team will notify you immediately and schedule you to meet with the physicians who make up our Multidisciplinary Clinic. These physicians gather with you to review and discuss your case and develop an individualized treatment plan. The result is coordinated, faster, more efficient treatment. With our Clinic, patients are able to start treatment within weeks, whereas at other facilities, it can take up to a month just to coordinate the treatment plan.
In addition, we have a nurse navigator who helps guide patients and families with anything and everything – from answering treatment questions to lending a supportive ear.
While our team will track and closely monitor your care, we will also keep your primary care physician informed of any tests, treatments, and results in order to enhance communication and coordination of care.
About the Clinic
"The huge benefit to the patient is that we're able to start treating the cancer in about two weeks," says Maria Quejada, MD, a medical oncologist with Edward Cancer Center. "It can take up to a month or longer to begin treatment if a patient has to visit multiple doctors and caregivers in multiple locations."

The opening of the Multidisciplinary Thoracic Oncology Clinic is the latest addition to the array of services offered at one of the busiest cancer centers in the west and southwest suburbs. In addition, Edward performs three times as many thoracic surgeries than any other provider in the region, according to Illinois Hospital Association COMPData for fiscal year 2008.
Edward's multidisciplinary team includes experts in medical and radiation oncology, thoracic surgery and pulmonary medicine as well as a clinical trials coordinator and social work and smoking cessation counselors.
The program involves the collaboration of specialty physicians who meet to develop a plan of care that is discussed with the patient on the day of his/her visit. All new patients are seen by the team within a week of referral. And, a nurse navigator coordinates every aspect of a patient's care.
"First and foremost, patients are getting the most advanced and highest quality cancer care available through Edward Cancer Center and the multidisciplinary team," says David Cziperle, MD, a thoracic surgeon with Edward Hospital and Cardiac Surgery Associates. "Our patients also have peace of mind when they leave with a treatment plan in hand. It's one less worry during a very stressful time in their lives."
