What is metabolic syndrome and how can it increase my risk of diabetes and heart disease?

Metabolic syndrome is a set of risk factors that, together, dramatically raise your risk for heart disease and diabetes. An estimated 50 million Americans have it and the National Institutes of Health says metabolic syndrome may overtake smoking as the leading risk factor for heart disease.

Metabolic syndrome is diagnosed by looking at several risk factors, including waist size, triglyceride level, cholesterol level, blood pressure and fasting glucose level. Although the syndrome isn't entirely understood, one theory is that insulin resistance is the driver, causing some of the other risk factors to occur. Insulin resistance happens when your body no longer uses insulin as efficiently, forcing the pancreas to make more insulin to convert glucose into energy.

"You can manage your risk factors by taking small, daily steps toward a healthy life," according to Zaid Jabbar, MD, an internal medicine physician with Edward Medical Group. "Important changes include weight loss, daily exercise, quitting smoking and eating healthfully."

Losing just 5 to 7 percent of body weight prevents or delays diabetes by nearly 60 percent.
