At Edward, we don't just treat illnesses, we try to prevent them. As one of Chicagoland's only community hospitals to have a genetic counselor on staff, we're able to help people identify if they are at risk for an inherited disease and what options they have to manage or prevent it.

In order to determine if genetic testing is right for you, talk to your doctor or ask for a referral to see our genetic counselor.

Elyse Weber, MS is a board certified genetic counselor who specializes in patient education and coordination of genetic testing. Elyse received her undergraduate degree from Benedictine University and her graduate degree from the University of Michigan. She joined Edward Hospital after working for eight years at the University of Chicago Medical Center. Elyse is licensed by the State of Illinois and she is a member of the National Society of Genetic Counselors and Genetic Task Force of Illinois. Elyse's primary interest is to educate individuals about their genetic risk factors, explain available options for diagnosis and treatment, and support them throughout the decision-making process.

During a genetic evaluation, our genetic counselor will take a detailed family history report. After evaluating your personal and family history, we can see if there is an increased risk for certain medical conditions in you or your family.

How is genetic testing performed?
In most cases, genetic testing often consists of a simple blood draw. The sample is sent to a laboratory where technicians look for gene mutations.  It is not necessary to fast before having blood drawn for a genetic test.

What is the cost of genetic testing and is it covered by health insurance?
The cost of genetic testing depends on the specific test that is ordered and can range from several hundred dollars to several thousand dollars.  For those individuals with suspicious personal or family histories genetic testing is often covered by health insurance.  If our genetic counselor recommends genetic testing, she will discuss with you the cost of testing, ways in which to check on insurance coverage, and billing practices prior to testing being performed.

Who performs the genetic testing?
Most genetic tests for inherited cancer syndromes are highly specialized and performed at only a few laboratories.  The most commonly tested for inherited cancer syndrome at Edward Hospital is hereditary breast and ovarian cancer (HBOC) syndrome due to mutations in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes.

We also offer genetic counseling for cardiovascular, pediatric and prenatal disorders.

How do I make an appointment for genetic counseling?
Appointments are available at convenient times in a comfortable setting at Edward Hospital. Call (630) 646-6020. A written referral from a physician is required for a consultation with our genetic counselor. This referral should be faxed to 630-527-3400 and must be received by us before an appointment can be scheduled

Where can I get more information about cancer and genetic testing for inherited cancer syndromes?
General information about many different types of cancer can be found by visiting the American Cancer Society.

Specific information about genetic testing for hereditary breast and ovarian cancer (HBOC) due to mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene can be found on the National Cancer Institute's website.
