Most women have no problems with pregnancy other than the normal discomforts, but your pregnancy may be considered high risk if you experience complications or have certain medical conditions that might complicate your pregnancy. Our Pregnancy Health Center has more information about high risk pregnancies

If you experience a high risk pregnancy or your baby needs special care, Edward offers the services you need, close to home. Read more below or meet our specialists.

Antepartum Unit
You may be admitted to our Antepartum Unit for Special Care Pregnancies if your doctor decides that it is necessary to monitor you or your baby's health status, to identify risk factors to treat complications, or to increase surveillance to prevent further problems. Learn more about what to expect and watch a video on Bedrest Therapy During Pregnancy.

Multiples
If you are expecting multiples, we have more information on special prenatal classes just for you to help you prepare for the birth of your multiples. Learn more.

Gestational diabetes
The Edward Diabetes Center offers small group classes for women who develop gestational diabetes during pregnancy. Learn more.

Genetic Counseling
As one of Chicago-land's only community hospitals to have a genetic counselor on staff, we're able to help people identify if they are at risk for an inherited disease and what options they have to manage or prevent it. Meet our genetic counselor or learn more at edward.org/genetics.

Edward's Perinatology Center
Edward's Perinatology Center is licensed and experienced in handling the most complicated cases for expectant women. Our center is staff by board certified perinatologists, who have treated rare and complex conditions. Board-certified perinatologists provide services on Edward's Naperville and Plainfield campuses. For more information, please call (630) 527-3278.

Services include chorionic villus sampling, amniocentesis, first trimester screening, fetal echocardiography, detailed fetal ultrasound screening and consultation for any maternal or fetal problems. A genetic counselor and perinatal sonographers also are on staff.

Newborn Intensive Care Unit
Edward's Newborn Intensive Care Unit is a Level III provider, recognized by the state as the highest level of care. Our board certified neonatologists and experience neonatal nurses are available 24/7 to treat any unexpected issues that may arise for babies born early or with congenital issues. We have a broad panel of pediatric subspecialists available for consultation, if needed, at Edward.

Transport Team
The Edward Hospital Transport Team keeps a dedicated ambulance available 24/7 to transfer women in high-risk pregnancy situations and premature infants to Edward Hospital who need pediatric specialists or a level of neonatal care not available in other areas. Learn more.
