Not just a man's disease Most women believe that breast cancer is their biggest health threat. In fact, more women die of heart disease than all types of cancer combined. But the good news is most cases are preventable.
Listen to your heart Many times women don't recognize their symptoms because they are different than the classic men's symptoms like pain in the left arm and crushing chest pains. Women can experience:
- Fatigue
- Indigestion
- Abdominal pain
- Shortness of breath
- Heart palpitations
If you notice any sudden change in your health, don't dismiss it as stress or think it's just in your head. Talk to your doctor. And if your doctor doesn't listen, get another opinion.
Know your risk By age 40, you should have an annual cholesterol and blood pressure check along with your mammogram. At 45, you should check your calcium score with an Ultra Fast Heart Scan if you have any of these risk factors:
- High blood pressure
- Smoking
- Obesity
- High cholesterol
- Diabetes
- Family history of heart disease
Heart disease kills more women than all types of cancer combined. Take an online risk assessment, like HeartAware. The HeartAware risk assessment is available online at www.edward.org/heartaware, Edward's online early detection center – one stop for people to find out their risk for serious illnesses and, if necessary, how to follow up with the appropriate screenings and treatment.
