When should I be screened?

According to Vince Bufalino, MD, President of Midwest Heart Specialists and medical director of cardiology at Edward, you're smart to want to know your risk for heart disease and what you can do about it; this #1 killer in the U.S. is largely preventable. The Ultra Fast Heart Scan is a safe and accurate way to detect heart disease in its earliest stages. The heart scan screens for early build-up of calcium in the coronary arteries, the most common cause of heart disease.

Ultra Fast Heart Scan (UFHS) is recommended if you're a man over 40 years of age or a woman over 45 who has one or more cardiac disease risk factors - you're a smoker or have high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, or a family history of heart disease.

Edward also offers an online cardiac risk assessment tool, Heart Aware edward.org/heartaware, that takes about five minutes to complete. At the end you'll receive a description of your 10-year cardiac disease risk, and follow-up recommendations regarding screenings and lifestyle changes, if needed.
