Edward Hospital Inpatient Occupational Therapy
EDWARD HOSPITAL INPATIENT OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY

Acute Care Rehabilitation is provided in an inpatient hospital setting for individuals with serious medical conditions. These patients often have experienced a sudden decline in medical and/or functional status; many are suffering from a worsening progressive disease, or a sudden onset of a new condition. The primary goal of acute care rehab is to address declines in performance of normal daily activities. Emerging research supports implementing early intervention of rehabilitation for quicker recovery and discharge.

The Edward Inpatient Rehabilitation Department provides coverage seven days a week. Our staff consists of ten Occupational Therapist, twenty Physical Therapists, five Physical Therapy Assistants, and nine Speech and Language Pathologists.

Areas of Practice include the following:

  • Critical Care- Medical ICU, Cardiac ICU, and Neuroscience ICU
  • Medical Surgical
  • Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Neuro Intervention
  • Neonatal Intensive care
  • Orthopedics
  • Oncology
  • Pediatrics

Occupational Therapy
In the acute care setting, Occupational Therapy practitioners play an integral role in the rehabilitation process. Occupational Therapy has a unique focus on addressing deficits and barriers that limit the patient's ability to perform activities. Some of these include independence with self care, home management, work related tasks, and participation in leisure pursuits.

Physical Therapy
Our acute care physical therapists will work with you diligently to assess the proper plan of care and intervention needed to get back on your feet quickly.

Often a patient and/or family member has contact with physical therapy once a disease process has started to effect a person's strength, mobility, flexibility, or endurance. Your physical therapist will also be able to recommend proper assistive equipment to assure safe ambulation and transferring.  At Edward our physical therapist's work closely with the patient's medical team (nursing, physician, social worker, case manager) to ensure that all patient's needs are met prior to discharge. They may recommend therapy after discharge whether it is at home, at an outpatient facility, or at a medical facility that provides intense rehab.

Speech Therapy
Edward Speech Language Pathologists work with a full range of diagnoses. They evaluate many conditions related to speech, language, cognition, communication, and swallowing disorders.

In the acute care setting, your therapist will perform a complete evaluation determining your ability to eat and swallow safely or to help you return to communicating effectively.
