As much as we like to see you, we'd much rather have you healthy and out of the hospital. The good news is most heart disease can be prevented with simple lifestyle changes. And we can help you control your blood pressure and cholesterol, reduce stress, eat better, get moving and stop smoking. Because even though we can do wonders to fix your heart, prevention is still the best medicine.

Lifestyle Under Construction

If you carry excess fat mainly around your belly, you could have metabolic syndrome, which increases your risk for heart disease, stroke and diabetes. This medically-supervised wellness program will give you the tools you need to change the way you think about food and exercise. Each week for 12 weeks you'll get advice from a dietitian, exercise physiologist, clinical psychologist and cardiac nurse. With some help from these experts, you can:

  • Lose 5 to 7 percent of your body weight - and keep it off
  • Improve your blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose levels
  • Learn to select and prepare foods that are good for your waistline and your heart
  • Make exercise a habit in your daily routine

Your primary care physician can be informed of your progress at three months and six months

Heart healthy food choices can still be tasty! You'll learn how to plan a healthy meal, read food labels at the grocery store, make good choices at restaurants, alter recipes to reduce fat and sodium, and much, much more. The 2-part series meets monthly on Tuesdays or Thursdays.  $40 for both sessions. FREE to Heart Hospital patients when scheduled within 30 days of discharge. Click here for the flyer.

Quit Smoking Programs

  • Freedom From Smoking
Freedom from Smoking provides a supportive and structured approach to quitting smoking. The six-week program is taught by American Lung Association trained instructors with the ultimate goal of helping individuals overcome their addiction and enjoy the benefits of better health. $60 fee covers all course materials. Call 630-527-6363 to register or Edward Nurse Heartline at 630-527-2825 for more details.

In addition to our on-site programs, our cardiac nurses can bring heart health education to your business, school, church or other organization. We provide stroke and vascular screenings, blood pressure checks, cholesterol screenings, and group presentations on a variety of topics.
