 FAITH-BASED RECOVERY AT LINDEN OAKS

Faith-based services give addictions patients another outlet for group therapy

Linden Oaks has partnered with Meier Clinic of Wheaton to offer faith-based services to patients in the chemical dependency program.

“Recovery is about finding ways to express feelings and learn coping skills, and faith-based services are an innovative outlet for adults to talk freely about Jesus Christ as a higher power and their spiritual beliefs,” explains Beth Sack, manager of addiction services at Linden Oaks.

Our faith-based program
Faith-based services meets for 1 ½ hours during the group therapy portion of the daily treatment program at Linden Oaks. The group is led by a therapist from Meier Clinic who has a theological background and pastoral counseling training. By integrating biblical principles and scripture, patients are able to deal with recovery topics such as guilt, deceit, shame or death. As a group, they spend time reflecting in prayer together.

The group is not limited to any specific denomination. In fact, Catholics and Muslims have participated as well as people who have gone away from their Christian faith but are interested in coming back again.

“The 12-step program used for recovery addresses spirituality and higher powers, but in a very broad sense. Many patients want to be able to speak freely about their own personal Christian beliefs, and this group gives these patients the opportunity to do so without offending others,” says Sack.

Patients like having the choice of attending faith-based groups, and it’s helpful that they’re able to relate to people with similar faith and values, according to Sack.

The size of the group is relatively small and the therapist is flexible about meeting individuals’ specific spiritual needs. The faith-based group is one component of Linden Oaks’ addictions program, and patients still receive education, cognitive behavioral therapy, and other interventions.

Patients interested in attending the faith-based group can receive more information at the time of their assessment with the Linden Oaks Resource and Referral Counselor.
