Screening Guidelines: What you need to know There have been a number of conflicting recommendations regarding mammograms and breast self-examinations. Edward Hospital experts recommend that you continue with your monthly self-examination and yearly mammogram. The recent news stories were predicated on an analysis of a study that, in our opinion, was very flawed and biased. Over the past 20 years, mortality from breast cancer has gone down significantly, including women between the ages of 40 - 49 years old. The primary cause of this is due to those who adhere to a regularly scheduled mammogram and monthly self-examination.
As physicians and health care providers, our goal is early detection and intervention. Through extensive experience, we have found numerous early cancers in women in their 40s. If this recommendation is enacted, many experts are concerned about the implications for those in their 40s whose cancers could go undiagnosed. So, the advice of radiology experts on staff at Edward is that women continue with their monthly self-exams and yearly mammograms.
