Marathon/half marathon training tips.

Edward Hospital Naperville Marathon & Half Marathon newsletter:

Tip #1 from our Medical Director
June 11, 2014

Core concentration

Regardless of whether you'll cover 26.2 or 13.1 miles on November 9, don't forget your core.  It's the key to a successful and injury-free training season and race day.

Your core consists of the muscles in your abdomen, on your sides, in your lower back, butt, hips and hamstrings.  Together, they contribute to how well and efficiently you're able to run fast, uphill and downhill.  And, a solid core is what allows you to have the endurance to maintain your pace and proper form at the end of a race.

Make sure to incorporate core work into your training several times each week - exercises like planks, squats and leg raises.  Go online or check with your fitness center training staff to learn about core training plans and specific core training exercises.  You'll definitely notice a difference when you're running!
