More than 25 million Americans suffer from diabetes, which is also the leading cause of new cases of blindness among adults in the U.S.
Diabetes-related eye diseases include diabetic retinopathy, in which the eye’s retina is damaged – cataracts – glaucoma – macular edema, in which fluid leaks into the retina – and retinal detachment.
With awareness and regular check-ups, Edward Medical Group doctor Tina Bhargava says diabetics can avoid serious eye problems.
To reduce your chances of developing eye problems from diabetes, stop smoking, and make sure to monitor and control your blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
