National recognition for Edward's cardiac care.
National study ranks Edward #1 for Coronary Interventional Procedures in Illinois
(Naperville, IL – October 18, 2010) – A report released by HealthGrades, the nation’s most trusted, independent source of physician information and hospital quality ratings, has named Edward Hospital #1 in Illinois for Coronary Interventional Procedures for 2012.
Coronary interventional procedures, such as balloon angioplasty and the insertion of stents, are performed in a cardiac catheterization lab to diagnose and treat heart attacks and coronary artery disease.
“We’re honored and humbled by the HealthGrades ranking,” says Mark Goodwin, MD, an interventional cardiologist with Midwest Heart Specialists and medical director of Edward's Cardiac Catheterization Lab. “We’re here to provide care for a cardiac emergency on a moment’s notice or diagnostic evaluations of patients who need these services. We take great pride in delivering excellent outcomes. We’re not only saving lives, but improving the lives of our patients, who are able to return to work and their families.”
In addition, HealthGrades named Edward one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Cardiac Care, Cardiac Surgery and Coronary Intervention for 2012.
“We view the recognition as a confirmation of Edward as the premier provider of cardiac services in the region,” says Vincent Bufalino, MD, medical director of cardiovascular services at Edward Heart Hospital and president and CEO of Midwest Heart Specialists. “Our philosophy is one that calls for a total team approach that is very patient focused. As we like to say, ‘Everybody eats, sleeps and dreams heart disease.’”

Edward’s emphasis on comprehensive cardiac care began in 1993 when Edward opened the state’s first licensed, freestanding outpatient cardiac catheterization lab in Illinois.
Edward enhanced its leadership in cardiac care in 2002 with the opening of Edward Heart Hospital, a first-of-its-kind healthcare concept in Illinois – comprehensive, advanced cardiac care in one location, including screening, diagnostic testing, diagnostic and interventional cardiology, open heart surgery, inpatient and outpatient services, prevention, education and rehabilitation.
The Heart Hospital opened with five floors and 71 beds. Today, after a $49.7 million, three-floor addition that was completed in 2007, there are nearly 120 beds dedicated to advanced cardiac care.
