(Naperville, IL - February 17, 2010) - Edward Hospital has received re-designation as a Magnet hospital for nursing excellence from the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
Edward, which employs 1,400 nurses, was originally recognized as a Magnet hospital in 2005 and is one of only two hospitals in DuPage County and the only one serving Will County to have earned the prestigious designation. Twelve hospitals in the Chicago area and 22 in Illinois are Magnet-recognized organizations. Only six percent of the nation's 6,000 hospitals are recognized as Magnet facilities by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Only two percent of the nation's hospitals have achieved Magnet re-designation.
Gail Wolf, chair of the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Magnet Commission, made the re-designation announcement during a conference call held Wednesday morning in the Edward Hospital Education Center Auditorium. She told nearly 200 Edward Hospital nurses, leadership team members, elected officials and community members in attendance the Commission's decision was unanimous.
"It's really quite a tribute to your nursing staff and all the people who are involved in the care of patients," Wolf said. "I actually think it's harder to get the re-designation than it is for the initial designation."
"Your compassion, your caring, your expertise, your intelligence, your knowledge, your passion for what you do make a difference every day to your patients," Chief Nursing Officer Patti Ludwig-Beymer, PhD, RN, CTN, NEA-BC, FAAN told Edward nurses in her congratulatory message. "It is so wonderful to see you acknowledged as a Magnet facility."

"The way in which each and every one of you has responded to our patients is truly remarkable," said Pamela Davis, Edward President & CEO. "I know in my heart, soul and brain the work that you do could not be done better by anyone, anywhere."
Edward maintained its Magnet designation following a rigorous process that included the submission of 2,900 pages of written documentation, a three-day site visit by Magnet appraisers this past November and a review of the document and site visit summaries by the Commission on Magnet Recognition, which decides whether to award Magnet status.
