Yorkville mom delivers Edward Hospital's first baby of 2010.

Babies in a rush to begin a new decade

By KATE DOUGHERTY For Sun-Times Media

Brodie Allan Diehl became the first baby born in the new decade in Naperville when he entered the world at 3:28 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 1, 2010.

Diehl weighed 5 pounds, 13 ounces, and he measured 18 inches in length when he was born at Edward Hospital. His parents are Becky and Ken Diehl, 36 and 33, respectively, of Yorkville. Baby Brodie is the couple's fourth child, preceded by sister Kailee, 13, brother Corey, 8, and sister Makenna, 20 months.

Diehl Road in Naperville is actually named for Ken Diehl's great-grandfather, and Brodie's great, great-grandfather.

The couple were already at the hospital on New Year's Eve but drove home at 1 a.m. on New Year's Day, only to turn immediately back around for a fast delivery, Ken Diehl said. Although Brodie was due Jan. 31, he came so quickly that the couple had to have another doctor on standby until their regular doctor, Dr. Mallika Rajendran, arrived.

Becky Diehl said this delivery, which lasted between 15 and 20 minutes, marked the first time Dr. Rajendran has delivered four children for one family.

"It was a good experience," Becky Diehl said. "I think we'll always have a story (both) because we left and came back, and because he was the first baby of the year."

In Bolingbrook, the first baby arrived at 2:13 a.m. at Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital. Logan Edward Skeate was born to Eva Donovan and Greg Skeate. He weighed in at 7 pounds, 11 ounces, and he measured 20 1/2 inches in length.

Skeate has five older siblings ranging in age from 2 to 11 years old. He was originally due Jan. 5.

"I was surprised because I did not expect to go to the hospital on New Year's Eve," Skeate's mother Donovan said. "We were at the family party and there was all this commotion. Even though he was my sixth child, I wasn't sure (at first that the pain) was contractions."

Here is a list of the first babies at local hospitals:

-- Olivia Patricia Barbush, born at Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove at 12:11 a.m. Barbush's parents, Julie and Dan Barbush, reside in Braidwood. Olivia weighed 7 pounds, 8 ounces at her birth.

-- Logan Edward Skeate, born at Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital at 2:13 a.m. Skeate's parents, Eva Donovan and Gregory Skeate reside in Bolingbrook. Logan weighed 7 pounds, 11 ounces at his birth.

-- Brodie Allan Diehl, born at Edward Hospital at 3:28 a.m. Diehl's parents, Becky and Ken Diehl, reside in Yorkville. Diehl weighed 5 pounds, 13 ounces at his birth.
