Edward Plainfield Cancer Center construction complete, all services now available.

(Naperville, IL - December 16, 2009) - Construction is complete, both floors are open and all services are available at the new $18 million, 30,000 square foot Edward Plainfield Cancer Center, located on the Edward Plainfield campus at 127th St. and Van Dyke Rd., providing residents with convenient access to the region's most preferred cancer care.

The new center offers the same personal and comprehensive outpatient medical and radiation oncology services as the Edward Cancer Center in Naperville, including the same physicians, leading-edge cancer research and the latest technologies that attack cancer cells while preserving healthy tissue.

"This is state-of-the-art cancer care that's convenient and closer to home," says Pam Davis, president and CEO, Edward Hospital.  "It's our latest step in providing access to high quality healthcare for the people of Plainfield and surrounding communities."

Radiation oncology, on the first floor of the Plainfield facility, opened in early December and has the capability to deliver the most sophisticated and precise radiation treatment options available to target and eradicate tumors, including image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) delivered by the Varian IX linear accelerator.

Medical oncology, on the 2nd floor, has been providing services since September, including chemotherapy, clinical trial enrollment and treatment support.

"The cancer care in Plainfield is what you would expect to receive at a teaching hospital, just like the services offered at our Naperville facility," says Alexander Hantel, MD, director of medical oncology, Edward Cancer Center.  "Patients have access to the most advanced and highest quality medical and radiation therapies available.  The fact that it's close to home for them is one less thing to worry about during a very stressful period of their lives."

The Edward Plainfield Cancer Center also features an eco-friendly rooftop garden designed to assist in treatment and healing.  The garden is visible and accessible to patients in the medical oncology area on the 2nd floor and features a waterfall, a variety of trees and plants, a putting green and a trellis overhang to provide shade.

Edward is most preferred for cancer care in its total service area according to a 2009 survey by the National Research Corporation and has received full approval from the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons.  Edward also has one of the most active clinical trials programs in the area outside of a university setting and has the most active cancer research program in DuPage County.

In addition, Edward provides numerous cancer support groups, including programs for caregivers and children of cancer patients and a dedicated breast care coordinator to help breast cancer patients navigate their treatment process from diagnosis through recovery.
