Fitness for the Whole Family

When Miki Thomas’s husband, Robert, told her that he was taking her somewhere special for their anniversary, she couldn’t wait to see what the surprise would be. She was even more surprised when they pulled into the parking lot at the Edward Health & Fitness Center in Naperville.

“Surprise! We are getting gym memberships.” said Robert. Ten years later, Miki, Robert, and their two children, six-year-old Brooke and nine-year-old Blake, are still active Edward Health & Fitness Center members.

“Nobody loves using the fitness center more than our two kids,” said Miki. “I started taking Blake to the KidsZone when he was four months old and Brook started when she was just six weeks.”

Edward Health & Fitness Center at Seven Bridges in Woodridge offers children's programs to keep kids active and help build healthy habits that will last a lifetime. Members and non-members with children can participate in classes, swimming lessons, special events and use the Naperville KidsZone or babysitting services at Seven Bridges for kids six weeks of age up to 15 years.

“There are so many classes to choose from that my kids never get bored. Blake participated in Early Beginnings and Preschool Camp classes, and began Tae Kwon Do. Brooke took a toddler tumbling class, and also took ballet and jazzy gymnastics,” said Miki. “They also participate in the special events like Monster Mash and Lunch with Santa, and have been coming to summer camp since they were five.”

In the last nine years, Miki’s kids have only missed one session of swimming lessons; a class that is a favorite of Brooke and Blake.

Children who are physically active on a regular basis will reap enormous benefits. Studies have shown that they:

  • Are less likely to become overweight
  • Have a decreased risk of developing type 2 diabetes
  • Have reduced blood cholesterol levels and lower blood pressure
  • Have higher self-esteem and reduced incidences of depression and anxiety
  • Are more likely to build strong bones and muscles
  • Are more attentive in school

“Enrolling my kids in these programs also helped me and my husband with our fitness goals,” said Miki. “I can do my work out when the kids are in class. Since they participate in several classes, going to the gym every morning has become a fun and healthy habit for our family.”
