'There's more to fitness than just being active'

How long have you been a member of EHFC?
I have been a member of EHFC since 2003 when my older daughter gave me a membership. She told me that I needed to work out. I’m a very active person: I like to golf, walk, and work in my garden. I’m always doing something. But, there’s more to fitness than just being active.

Why is fitness important to you?
Exercise is important for my health – now and later. I want to be in the best shape I can be. Mentally, participating in a group exercise class means I have to follow the steps and instructions. Physically, I work on my balance and upper body strength that I don’t get in my normal everyday life.

Which services have you used at EHFC?
I attend group exercise classes including Energized Cardio; Yoga; Zumba; and Energized Strength.

Last year, I had a great experience with the physical therapy services at Seven Bridges. Last October (2011), after having shoulder surgery, I received Physical Therapy to help with my recovery. Because I was in such great shape, I was back to my regular exercise routine and active lifestyle within a month. The physical therapist was very helpful, even though I only needed a few sessions.

Finally, one of my favorite places is the Spa at Seven Bridges – and it’s not just for pleasure! A massage once a month helps relieve some pain that I experience from a bulging disc in my neck. I’ve been doing this for years now, and I can’t say enough good things about Brian Sommer from the Spa staff.

What are the benefits of the Senior Mid-Day Membership?
I switched from a full-time membership to senior mid-day because it fits in with my active lifestyle. There are plenty of classes available that are gauged toward seniors – and the classes are not easy. Two fitness centers allows you to choose from one place or the other, and adjust where you work out based on what you want to do. Both facilities are always alive and busy with members during the mid-day.

What makes Edward unique?
The instructors and other members at the fitness center make this a special place. It means a lot to me that the fitness center is associated with Edward Hospital. I feel that the organization maintains high expectations: the staff is highly trained and the facility is well-kept. It is important to be part of a big community organization like Edward.
