Exercise changes teen member perspective 05/18/2012
Carson Kogut, teen member, with Amanda Moore, mother
Carson Kogut has been a member of EHFC-7B ever since he can remember. He officially joined when he was just two years old because his mother, Amanda Moore, started working in the Spa. “He’s practically grown up at EHFC, playing in the Adventure Center, taking classes for kids, and going to a few camps,” Amanda says.
Now, at 13 years old, Carson is taking the Fitness Challenge class, designed to give teens a total body workout including use of the pool, track and weight machines.
Carson is looking forward to the fitness center’s new membership options that will allow younger members more flexibility to exercise. Beginning May 1, teen members (ages 12-15) have access to use the Naperville club. Members ages 16 and older currently have access to the Naperville club.*
Q: What makes Edward unique?
A: Honestly, we’ve never been to any other fitness center; we just know Edward. The classes and instructors are great, and it’s wonderful that the fitness center allows teens to work out there.
Q: Why is fitness important to Carson?
A: During an annual physical/check-up once, Carson’s doctor told us that his BMI was a little high. Last September, Carson started attending the Fitness Challenge (taught by Denise Davern) to feel better about himself. The class incorporates a little bit of everything from tips about nutrition and strength training to information about physical fitness and making healthy lifestyle choices. He’s lost 15 pounds so far!
Q: Why does Carson enjoy going to the fitness center?
A: He enjoys meeting other kids, and he enjoys the variety of the class. Each week is different - from swimming to the TRX and using weights, it’s different every time.
Q: What changes have you noticed in Carson?
A: Exercise has changed his perspective. The other day in P.E. class at school Carson had to run a mile and he got his fastest time ever! He’s definitely seeing positive results across the board. After going to a class at EHFC, Carson’s adrenaline is pumping and he looks forward to going back.
*To exercise at Edward Health & Fitness Centers, teen members must first complete a Teen Evaluation and Consultation and be accompanied by an adult member each time they come to work out. At Seven Bridges and Naperville, teen members may use the main fitness floor, basketball courts, free weight room, adult lap pools, free programming in the aerobics studio, spin and multipurpose rooms, and locker rooms.
