Breastfeeding Ctr.--new, convenient location.

Naperville Sun HealthAware column:

Consultants ease way for moms new to breastfeeding
By: Edward Hospital

Edward Hospital’s Outpatient Breastfeeding Center, which provides lactation consulting to women regardless of where they gave birth, has a new home, in a larger space near the hospital’s south entrance.

The expansion helps accommodate the 180 outpatient lactation consultations that the center provides monthly for moms, both before their babies are born, and after they leave the hospital and return home.

“We needed more space, now we have four comfortable consulting rooms and a waiting room,” says nurse Lynne Hansen, an Edward lactation consultant.

Naperville resident Kim Schaefer is one of the moms who’s used the consulting service.

“Breastfeeding is one of those things you have to learn from experience,” Schaefer says.

She says it was helpful to take classes and read books about breastfeeding before her first daughter, Nora, was born 2-1/2 years ago. But it was only after regular meetings with Edward’s lactation consultants that Schaefer began to believe she could overcome the obstacles and accomplish her goal of breastfeeding her baby.

She learned techniques to help Nora latch on properly so she could get enough to eat.

“Among other things, I learned that skin-to-skin contact with the baby is important,” she says.

Schaefer continued as an outpatient with Edward lactation consultant Sue Rio during Nora’s early months.

“It was a while before I felt like my baby and I were comfortable and good at it,” she recalls.

When Kim’s second daughter, Kendall, was born at Edward this summer, lactation consultant Justyna Lagman visited Kim, and told her that she and her baby were off to a good start. To make sure things stayed on track, Schaefer followed up with Rio as an outpatient when Kendall was a week old.

“It was wonderful to hear that the breastfeeding was going well, and the baby was gaining good weight,” she says.

Her upcoming consultations will focus on pumping milk when she returns to work in October.

“I was surprised I had difficulty with breastfeeding,” Kim said. “But with the expertise and wonderful support of the Edward lactation consultants, I’m able to provide my babies with the very best thing for them.”

Naperville resident Jen Maher had her first baby, Kellan, on Aug. 7 — six weeks early. Premature babies have special feeding issues, so their moms face even more unknowns regarding breastfeeding.

Edward’s Newborn Intensive Care Unit features private areas for breastfeeding, and dedicated lactation consultants to advise mom throughout her baby’s stay.

“Lactation consultants Lynne (Hansen) and Debbie (Jordan) were there to answer my questions and serve as troubleshooters,” Maher says. “I learned about use of a nipple shield, for example. It gives the baby something to latch onto, and it moderates the flow.

“I’m not sure I would have known to take advantage of the lactation services to the extent they’re available if I had not had such access to Debbie and Lynn during Kellan’s stay in the NICU. I hope those who have a more ‘normal’ delivery take advantage of these services.”

Schaefer appreciates the new, larger lactation area and its convenient location.

“The new center was much-needed and is a blessing to new moms,” she says.
