Let's Talk

I have a relative who's skipping doses and cutting pills in half to save money on the cost of his medication.  I know that can't be good.  Do you have some advice I can pass along?

Prescription drugs are heavily regulated for a reason - many of them are strong and fast acting with potential side effects, especially when used incorrectly.  That's why "doctor's orders" are important to follow.

For example, if your doctor prescribes an antibiotic, you might start feeling better right away.  However, if you abruptly stop taking it, or if you take a lower dose, the bacteria causing your illness is only weakened instead of being eliminated and you could get sick again.

Avoid sharing prescriptions even if you have the same symptoms.  Remember, your doctor prescribes a medication based on your symptoms and other conditions, as well as factors such as your age and weight (especially in kids).

Read the label and other information provided with the prescription.  If you experience any of the side effects listed, consult your physician immediately.  He or she will advise you what to do next.

Whenever your doctor writes a prescription, ask questions and be aware of the brand and generic names, how the medicine should look and the amount you should be taking.  If something doesn't seem right, consult your physician or pharmacist.
