The Edward Sleep Center remains committed to providing the community and surrounding areas with the most current information on diagnosing and treating sleep breathing disorders like sleep apnea. The American Sleep Apnea Association defines sleep apnea as an involuntary cessation of breathing during sleep. People diagnosed with sleep apnea stop breathing repeatedly during sleep, often for a minute or longer. Untreated sleep apnea can have serious consequences: high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, increased risk for work related and motor vehicle accidents caused by drowsy driving, type 2- diabetes and depression. The National Sleep Foundation estimates that nearly 18 million Americans are afflicted with this condition.
