Self-injury has been gradually on the rise for the past decade, particularly among adolescents. Behaviors such as cutting and burning of one's self can both confuse and frighten family members of adolescents engaging in these behaviors. Linden Oaks has been dedicated to providing adolescent self-injury services for the past several years and is continuing to meet this ever increasing need in our community with our Discoveries Program.
Generally, we recommend a two- to three-week program in our Partial Program which consists of six hours of daily therapy including group, individual and family. Our goal is to help the individual identify and address the underlying issues related to the self-injury while teaching healthy coping skills. Discoveries Self-injury programming is based on the dialectical behavioral and cognitive behavioral models of therapy - to teach a person how to challenge negative thinking and to find skills that replace self-injurious behaviors.
