One size fits all doesn't work in emergency care, especially when it comes to kids. They need oxygen masks and other equipment sized just for them. They also need staff who are expert in the right dose of medication, as well as in the right words to coax a smile.
Edward's Emergency Department is recognized as an Emergency Department Approved for Pediatrics (EDAP). Edward was the first hospital in DuPage County to open a Pediatric Emergency Department (January of 2000). Since then, the Edward Kids' ER consistently ranks in the top 2 percent of the country in patient satisfaction and is one of few Kids' ERs in the Chicago area with all board certified pediatric emergency physicians. Shorter wait times, more efficiency With its own exclusive CT scanner, patients don't have to wait for openings in the CT scanners in the main radiology department. The latest information systems, lab and radiology technologies help ensure that turnaround times overall are significantly better than the national average. In most cases our young patients and their families are on their way home in less than an hour.
Kid-friendly
The doctors and nurses who provide our emergency care for kids have gone through special training in use of equipment and techniques for diagnosing and treating children. Painless IVs and special bandages that take the place of stitches are a few of the kid-friendly treatments available. The rooms are private and the oceanic décor helps ease the fears of our young patients. Wave-like curves are built into the ceiling and walls, while turtles, crabs and other sea creatures pave the way down halls.
Child Life Specialists (pictured below) are available to provide comfort to children and teens that are being treated in our emergency department. Their primary focus is to promote healing and help patients adjust to the emotional challenges of hospitalization and treatment. This is achieved by our child life team by offering medical preparation, introducing coping strategies, and utilizing distraction techniques. Their one-on-one work with a patient and family helps ease the stress the patients are experiencing and provides a form of support for the entire family system.
