Edward's Emergency Department is recognized as an Emergency Department Approved for Pediatrics (EDAP). The blue and green oceanic décor helps ease the fears of our young patients. Wave-like curves are built in the ceiling and walls, while large turtles, crabs and other sea creatures pave the way down halls. The bathrooms, complete with child-size sinks and toilets, have mosaics of divers and fish on the walls. The reception area has a lighthouse that holds a TV, and a sailboat for seating, while the patient rooms feature whale-shaped benches for family members.

Age-Appropriate Equipment
According to a recent report from the Institute of Medicine, many hospitals are not well prepared to treat pediatric emergency patients. Only about 6 percent of hospitals had all recommended pediatric supplies and only 25 percent of U.S. EDs had access to a physician board-certified in pediatric emergency medicine. Our Pediatric ED is equipped with the latest life-saving emergency medicine technology and equipment, stocked in numerous age-appropriate sizes. If a child needs to be intubated, for example, we have every tube size down to a neonate - tubing that's the size of a straw. And we have oxygen masks down to the size for a 6 pound baby.

Kid-friendly hydration
Dehydration is a serious health issue, especially for kids who can dehydrate more quickly than adults. Edward’s ED uses oral medication to stop vomiting and to begin rehydrating children faster and painlessly.

Gentle mending
Dermabond tissue adhesive is used to mend certain minor cuts. There are no stitches with Dermabond and it is easily removed, too. It peels off by itself in about seven days.

When stitches are required we can sometimes use LET, an anesthetic agent applied to certain lacerations to numb the skin without the need for injection. It is a liquid that is applied to the wound with a q-tip or cotton ball. This allows for an essentially pain-free experience for children requiring stitches.

Image Gently
The Image Gently campaign was started by the Alliance for Radiation Safety in Pediatric Imaging. The program aims to increase radiation protection for children. Edward uses pediatric specific techniques for tests like CT, xrays, and interventional radiology. The ED physicians strive to use tests carefully in kids to minimize their exposure to radiation.

ER Wait Times
Our Kids' ER is designed for safety and efficiency, as well as family-friendliness. Improved information technology and better access to lab and radiology services have helped shave the wait times. In most cases patients see a physician in less than 30 minutes and are out the door in about an hour. This helps reduce anxiety for patient and parents alike. Learn more about our wait times at www.edward.org/ErWaitTimes.
